JuneBug’s ancestors grew up in the state that was comprised of sixty percent enslaved people until the end of the Civil War. Radical reconstruction brought freedom to the enslaved people for thirteen years. After that period African American elected officials were stripped of their power and positions. Powerful elements in the community pushed to return African Americans to pre reconstruction status.
